Hierarchy
The Republic operates on a uniform meritocratic ladder. The same eight ranks apply to every Branch and every Directorate — so that a Commander of Industry and a Commander of Operations hold equivalent rank and inter-operable authority.
The Eight Ranks
| # | Rank | Latin | Scope of Authority | Access |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | First Consul | Consul Primus | Apex of the Republic | All |
| 2 | Director | Praetor | One Directorate (Praetoria) | Directorate + Consilium |
| 3 | Commander | Praefectus | Wing / Squadron / Guild / Cell / Convoy | Tactical + personnel in span |
| 4 | Officer | Centurio | Direct member management | Operations + personnel in span |
| 5 | Veteran | Decanus | Informal mentor; operational anchor | Members + mission channels |
| 6 | Soldier | Miles | Full operational Citizen in arms | Members + mission channels |
| 7 | Citizen | Civis | Integrated member establishing record | Members |
| 8 | Recruit | Tiro | Provisional entrant under orientation | Provisional |
Notes
- Soldier (Miles) is the standard operational rank after a Citizen demonstrates specialisation under arms or craft for their Branch. A Citizen who remains non-operational remains a Citizen.
- Veteran (Decanus) is the rank of an experienced operator entrusted with informal mentorship. Not always held before Officer, but the most common path.
- Officer (Centurio) and Commander (Praefectus) are both management ranks. The difference is span: an Officer manages members directly; a Commander manages Officers.
- Director (Praetor) is the rank of the head of a Directorate. There are exactly ten, each appointed by the First Consul.
- First Consul (Consul Primus) is a single office. Succession is defined in the Charter.
Triplet Identity
A member's full identity is a triplet:
[Rank] · [Branch — Cohors] · [Directorate]
For example: Centurio · Arma (Classis) · Praetoria Bellica — an Officer in the Combat Branch's naval division, under the Operations Directorate.
The Holy Office — Parallel Column
The Sanctum Officium Vigiliae runs alongside the chain of command, not under it. Its members carry an additional rank in parallel to (or in place of) the standard ladder.
| Rank | Latin | Scope |
|---|---|---|
| Commissar-General | Commissarius Generalis | Head of the Holy Office; Director of Doctrine & Discipline; seat on Consilium |
| Master of the Vigil | Magister Vigiliae | Operational head under the Commissar-General |
| Senior Commissar | Commissarius Senior | Oversight of a cluster of Commissars |
| Commissar | Commissarius | Standard rank; assigned to sub-unit, council, or operation |
| Aspirant Commissar | Commissarius Aspirans | Trainee under a Senior Commissar |
Full charter of the Holy Office: The Sanctum Officium Vigiliae.
Progression — From Recruit to Citizen
The path from public discovery to full Citizen is staged. No promotion is given; every step is earned by demonstrated contribution and loyalty.
- Public — discovery (this site, Discord invite, RSI org page).
- Candidate — first contact via the Praetoria Civium intake channel.
- Tiro (Recruit) — provisional entry; 2–4 week probation.
- Oath of Vigil — ceremonial passage, witnessed by an Officer of the Praetoria Fidei. The Sacramentum Vigiliae is sworn.
- Civis (Citizen) — assigned to a Branch and a Directorate.
- Specialisation — operational training; promotion to Miles, Decanus, or beyond by merit.
